Firewalls and Data Safety

Too many entities have been compromised too many times because of underestimating the importance of a firewall. Historically associated with preventing errant employees from accessing prohibited sites like pornographic or web-based mail, firewalls have evolved into a valuable tool to protect the data integrity of the business and the customers. When used in conjunction with an anti-virus application, firewalls are an effective tool to prevent data leakage and data loss through viruses or online thieves. Firewalls cannot be used in isolation to protect the data stored on your home or office computers. They have to be used in combination with a quality anti-virus program so that they not only prevent unacceptable data transfer, they are able to recognize if any harmful entities are trying to enter your system.

Need for a Firewall

Whether you own a business or are using a home computer, without a firewall anyone can access your computer. You may think that no one is interested in your computer but you would be wrong. Your computer is identifiable via its IP address which is like a fingerprint – it is unique to just your computer. Hackers often times program their systems to find vulnerable IP addresses and then attack these computers and steal private information.

How do Firewalls Work

Firewalls are essentially filters. They analyse the data coming into your system and leaving the system and verify that they meet certain criteria. Only if the criterion is met, is the transfer permitted. In this way, firewalls protect the data existing on your system. They prevent harmful viruses and hackers from entering your network and deleting your files. Firewalls can also work in other intelligent ways. They can warn you if you are sending data to an unsecure location, particularly one with insufficient encryption.

Protection offered by Firewalls

Firewalls, especially Sonicwall and Cisco firewalls offer protection to the user in a variety of ways. Firstly, they protect against port intrusions, which are exploited by hackers looking to steal private information. Secondly, they prevent remote logins by random strangers looking to see the data running on your system. Firewalls are designed to analyse Internet applications you have downloaded on to your system and check whether they contain any backdoors that convey data back to the Internet. They also prevent hackers from hijacking your email account and sending errant mails to your contact list.
